Chapter

Nineteen

A sentinel inside the manor walls.

An intruder who happened to look like him.

Damn. As the various threats against him and his people mounted, Atiernan found himself grappling for a solution. Something needed to be done—even if it meant impulsively returning Miranda’s power without weighing the consequences.

Luckily for her, the witch was no longer his sole concern. For the first time in years, he felt…uneasy. The impulses he’d spent millennia controlling were threatening to resurface with every passing second. Miranda’s blood had been the mere tipping point. His fangs ached, constantly extended. He wanted to bite. Destroy. Rip. Tear.

Damn waiting patiently for answers, he wanted blood.

For now, he’d start with investigating the witch’s story. Presumably, she saw a man that coincidentally looked like the figure he saw in the slain sentinel’s memories. Could they be the same person?

He doubted it. The fortress was enchanted. No one short of an expert mage—or witch, in fact—could break those protective bonds unnoticed. Not even an average daemon could amass that kind of magic. Unless, of course, he had a witch consort. Atiernan couldn’t take credit for the wards. No, they had been erected thousands of years ago on this plot of land by the very woman he once thought would be by his side for eternity.

Liva… Even thinking of her name inspired a wealth of reactions he couldn’t compare to anyone else. Not even Miranda.

Though, they were from the same coven. Now, more than ever, that knowledge itched at him. After all this time, he had no idea if she were still alive—though, on second thought, he had no doubt she would be.

Liva was a force, unlike anyone he’d ever encountered. And if anyone would know how to engineer a hoard of vicious sentinels skilled in evading her own protection spell…

He growled at the possibility. After centuries of silence, Liva had chosen to target him. But why? And who had she used as her proxy? The appearance of the man unnerved him. As he neared his study, he spotted Benjamin and gestured him over.

“I want the manor searched from top to bottom. Every room. Every inch.”

If there were an intruder, he would find them.

“Sir.” Benjamin hesitated. “What about the witch?”

He frowned. Miranda was still a threat, even if he refused to acknowledge just how dangerous she could be. He’d avoided one glaring way Liva could have circumvented her own protection spell.

Via another witch, of course—one from the same damn coven. He told himself he’d chosen her at random, but that would be a lie. The second he decided to capture a witch, he’d gone into the mortal realm himself rather than delegate the task to someone else.

He alone watched her. For days he observed that coven, homing in on the strange, plain woman with dark hair who seemed both revered and mistrusted by those in her orbit.

Even now, he could picture her clearly—dressed in the modest clothing witches preferred, her hair unbound. She spent hours out in the fields, combing through various plants with the care most women tended to their children with.
